At El Golfo we consider our workers to be our company’s most valuable asset.
Due to the fast and steady growth of our business during the last years, there has been a great increase in the demand of manpower for our different production processes.
In addition to these quantitative needs, the requirement of qualified and diversified workers arose.
El Golfo has adopted new and diversified selection, training and qualification processes for the company’s over 1500 workers in its different activity areas.
Human resource is an essential part of El Golfo’s success in the achievement of progressive goals in all productive areas becoming one of the most important Chilean companies.
One of El Golfo’s main concern is the increase of its workers’ levels of knowledge, skills and experiences, all of which facilitate both their personal development as well as the fulfillment of organizational objectives. It is under this purpose that training and educational programmes are promoted in the different areas of the company, thus enabling a constant professional updating of our workers.
El Golfo is constantly promoting educational programmes aimed at the completion of workers’ primary and secondary education.
These specially designed programmes fully compatible with working hours, allow those workers who were unable to complete their formal education to obtain their Secondary education certificate.
El Golfo has a firm commitment and a constant concern with regards to labour risk prevention in its different working areas. Hence, the implementation of risk control and training programmes aimed at the reduction of labour accidents and professional diseases.
At each of El Golfo’s plants the Company has also implemented a program for the control of accidents and emergencies that could affect workers or facilities. This has positioned the company as a publicly recognized leader in the area of risk prevention within the Chilean fishing industry. Said position is supported by El Golfo’s low accident rate.
Our workers are represented by six labour unions. The one representing the Plant of Frozen Products groups the highest number of workers. There is also a union for Fishmeal plants located in Isla Rocuant and in Corral.
There are also some internal unions for the crews of Purse seiners and trawlers, for machinery engineers, Captains and Pilots.
Founded on July 7th, 1993, the Club Deportivo Pesquera El Golfo currently has near 183 members who participate in sports, recreational and competitive activities. The Sports Club is also an instance to practice different sport disciplines, where professional values and principles are promoted and are then reflected in daily work. The members of this Club represent the company in various external championships, being the Fishing Industry Olympics one of the outstanding events where El Golfo is always showing a leading performance.
Established in May 1994, our Social Work Committee addresses the needs of company’s workers as well as the needs of the community through solidarity activities.
The committee is focused on helping most needy people both inside and outside the company, and on assisting community organizations. Its financial resources come from the company and the workers.
It was until recent years that the fishing industry was almost exclusively for men. Women were considered as not suitable for this kind of work. Nonetheless, women play an important role for El Golfo nowadays. Near 50% of its production labour force is women.
